Understanding Massage (Part 1)

There are many different approaches and applications to massage. Here are few of the many different types :-

Swedish Massage, a general whole body massage using oils on the skin to facilitate treatment. This is the basis of all Western forms of massage treatment.

Shiatsu, with this Japanese style you generally stay dressed and are treated on the floor. It balances all bodily systems.

Deep Tissue, this approach is powerful and often painful although the benefits can be great. It is helpful in restructuring the body, improving posture.

Holistic Pulsing, clothes on, you are gently rocked, the rocking or pulsing releasing tension.

Sensual Massage, usually undress and this is excellent for couples to help develop intimacy.

Aromatherapy, the use of naturally occuring essential oils to enhance treatment. Often used as a treatment in themselves with different oils being applied to different parts of the body. Pure essential oils have great healing properties.

General benefits of a massage therapy :
Increases your body self awareness and sensitivity

Reduces your stress, tension and anxiety levels

Calms the nervous system

Relaxes, focuses and clears your mind

Helps to improve and maintain your posture

Helps to fulfil your need for a caring and nurturing touch

Encourages self esteem and a general feeling of well being

Improves your emotional awareness

Massage Therapy is :
The holistic application of physical touch to affect the system of the body : the muscular, skeletal, digestive, elimination, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, emotional, mental and nervous system.

It is the manipulation to the soft tissues of the body with hands for therapeutic, healing, relaxing and pleasureable effects.

It is the loving touch of the heart expressed through the hands

Benefits to your muscular system

Massage increases the blood supply and nutrition to your muscles.

Massage helps your muscles recover more quickly from exertion and fatigue.

Massage relaxes your muscles, effectively reducing spasms, tension and cramping.

Massage reduces and breaks down adhesions (knots) and fibrosis.

Massage strecthes your connective tissue.

Massage helps to re-establish your proper muscular tone.

Massage reduces your muscle and soft tissue pain.

Massage supports increased work capacity and encourages your metabolism.

Massage helps prevents mascular atrophy (wasting from injury and paralysis)

Benefits to your skeletal systems
Massage improves the circulation and nutrition of the joints and helps increase your range of joint movement

Massage reduces joint strain and compression through releasinng tight muscles and tendons

Massage increases the ease and efficiency of your movements

Massage helps to increase the retention of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur in the bones and this aids in fracture healing

Benefits to your respiratory system
Massage deepens and normalises the breathing pattern through relaxation, and release of tension in the breathing structures, both the rib cage and the muscles of respiration

Massage can help to relieve congestion in the lungs through percussive and compressive movements

Massage increases the action of the heart, stimulating the blood flow to and from the lungs, helping with the elimination of waste and the absorption of oxygen

Benefits to your circulatory system
Massage increases the nutrition of the tissues via an increased exchange of fluids and materials

Massage, via the mechanical actions on the soft tissues, produces a dilation of the blood vessels which helps to improve your circulation

Massage helps to reduce the lack of blood and by direct pressure and stimulation reduces pain due to the iritation of nerves that control your circulatory system

Massage enhances the elimination of the waste products of your metabolism

Massage helps to reduce any swelling

Massage increases the number of red blood cells in your circulation

Massage has the overall effect of lowering your blood pressure and reduces your pulse rate

Massage facilitates tissue healing through the enhancement of circulation

Massage increases tissue fluid and assists lymphatic, circulation thus reducing swelling an enhancing the immune and filtering activities of this system

Massage increases both your venous and lymphatic flow

There are few other bodily system that you can benefit from massage. I will be sharing them in my next blog post.

I am not a massage therapist but received my training in the area of holistic massage for more than 2 years at a wellness centre and I love to share a little bit of the knowledge and skill I have learned over the years.

So, now that you have better understanding of the benefits of massage and the benefits it deliver on different parts of the body, please feel free to drop by any wellness centre and insist for a trained therapist to deliver the optimum result your body needs.

    Loic sorta took the words out of my mouth. Massage therapy just has so many benefits to list that it is so ridiculous. I’m sure if people had the money to spend; they would be there every single day. I love the detail that you provide here Pearly. Makes me just want to ship in and book a massage session myself. I thought about being a massage therapist but that never happened. Great post for being your first on the charts. Look forward to reading more.

    What a very detailed post! Great job!
    It is amazing how many benefits your whole body receives from a massage. Apparently this is something we should do for ourselves very often. Thank you for emphasizing all the multiple benefits and types.

    For most of us, massage is thought of as a luxury, but you’ve made it evident that it should be a necessity. I’ve had just a couple massages in my life and they were paid for by someone else. So very soon now, I’ll do it for myself.

    Providing massages for others is such a great service!

    I agree, the health benefits of massage are tremendous, not only physically but emotionally as well. The most effective way for us to be healthy is to take a holistic approach, focusing on the wellness of our bodies rather than treating ourselves once we’ve fallen out of wellness. Methods such as massage therapy can play a key role in holistic health and overall well being.

    My daughter is a biokinesionics practitioner, and massage is her favourite part of it. After seeing what she can do, I often wonder why people go for the more dramatic and potentially dangerous methods when they can have a gentle Shiatsu massage. What my daughter does is not always as gentle as Shiatsu, but a person's body TELLS her what it needs, and she does it. It's amazing!
